Last weekend our four Top End communities – Lajamanu, Kalkarinji, Ngukurr and Gapuwiyak descended on Darwin to battle it out on the sporting field at the annual Darwin Wanta Cup. Teams enthusiastically competed in basketball, soccer and various relays. Our Warlpiri communities pulled off a clean sweep across the board- with Lajamanu (following Yuendumu’s Central Australian Wanta Cup success) winning the tournament. Congratulations to all players and teams – especially Lajamanu on a fantastic win.

Students selected to attend the Darwin Wanta Cup were chosen based on strong school attendance and good behaviour. Congratulations to all students chosen to attend.

A clear highlight for all four Wanta teams was performing the guard of honour for the Melbourne Demon’s before they played the Adelaide Crows at TIO stadium. The Demon’s also took the time to attend the Wanta Cup, talk to the kids and cheer on the teams. The Melbourne players were fantastic taking the time to get to know the kids, they have all gone home with priceless memories! Check out the video below to watch the Wanta teams wave flags and cheer on the Melbourne Demons in a guard of honour.
