What We Do
Wanta Aboriginal Corporation tackles the significant gap in education outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The Wanta Academy program was established in October 2013 with the first Academy opening in the remote community of Yuendumu in Central Australia. As a result of its success, Wanta has opened a further seven Academies spread throughout the Northern Territory in the communities of Ntaria, Arlparra, Lajamanu, Kalkarinji, Ngukurr, Papunya and Gapuwiyak. Our staff work with upper primary and secondary students to increase school attendance and improve educational outcomes and youth transition to vocational opportunities. We do this by through the provision of sport, recreation and cultural activities.
Wanta also manages three Remote Schools Attendance Strategies (RSAS) in Yuendumu, Ntaria and Papunya in Central Australia. The RSAS program is a Federally funded initiative that engages local staff to work with schools, families, parents, and community organisations to ensure all children go to school every day. Wanta programs provide countless benefits to the students and communities we work with.
Our staff work tirelessly in challenging situations to ensure:
- Increased school attendance in remote communities.
- Students have clear pathways to employment by providing links to vocational education opportunities.
- Provide various sport and recreation opportunities that encourages a healthy lifestyle and a safer community.
- We create local indigenous employment through our programs and nurture our staff to reach their full potential.
