Wanta currently runs eight Academies throughout the Northern Territory. Our Academies operate in the communities of Yuendumu, Ntaria, Papunya, Arlparra, Ngukurr, Lajamanu, Kalkarinji and Gapuwiyak.
The objectives of the Sports Academies are :
1) Increased health and well-being of students
- Deliver daily sporting activities including skill sessions and games in AFL and Basketball
- Coordinate reward trips and activities and Sports Carnivals within community
- Open an Academy Room before school, recess and lunchtime which is designated as a space for Year 6-12 students and a healthy breakfast is provided each morning.
2) Improved education outcomes
- Sports Academy Officers are employed to provide mentoring and one-on-one tutoring in the classroom.
- Academy Officers provide support for vocational education
3) Enhanced employment opportunities.
- Relevant training opportunities and experiences are designed for the students
- Vocational education experiences are offered to students both in community and in regional centres.
