International Women’s Day celebration in Ntaria

On February 28 the Ntaria Academy joined in the celebration of women world-wide by hosting an International Women’s Day Night in partnership with the Ntaria School.  As well as running various school engagement activities, Wanta also works to inspire and motivate young indigenous women to realise their potential.  Over twenty young women, their mothers and young mothers attended the event.  During the evening, the group discussed the importance of being a woman and each girl identified a woman who had inspired them in their life. The young women in attendance then learned about twenty Australian Aboriginal women who have created positive change throughout history within a number of disciplines including politics, social justice and youth programs.  Three of this years’ International Women’s Day topics stood out to the young women in attendance and initiated strong interest and discussion, these were:  We will forge positive visibility of women. We will challenge stereotypes and bias. We will influence the beliefs and actions of others.  After the formalities, the women were pampered and celebrated. Lajamanu girls meet the AFL Women’s Adelaide team

Last week the AFL Women’s competition held their inaugural match between the Adelaide Crows and the Freemantle Dockers at TIO Stadium in Darwin. In communities across the Territory ‘football is life’ so it was pure delight and excitement when eight of the girls from our Lajamanu girls Academy were chosen to attend based on their excellent school attendance and behaviour at school. The eight girls selected and our Wanta staff excitedly made the nine hour trek to watch the Adelaide Crows Women’s team take on the Dockers. On the morning of the game the girls were lucky enough to meet and talk to the Crows players as they were finishing their final training session. This was super exciting for the girls and they were buzzing all day afterwards.  Some of the girls were interviewed for the ABC news and made it on TV. The Crows were gracious enough to not only give their time but they also donated some of their clothes, balls and posters to the girls. Our girls were excited and enjoyed watching the Crows win.  Meeting the team was the highlight of the trip and something they will never forget.
