Over the April school holidays, something pretty special was happening out in Yuendumu.
The Wanta School Holiday Program brought together around 70 local young people for a mix of music, filmmaking, and hands-on creativity and it didn’t take long for the energy to build.
One of the biggest highlights? Filmmaking. Kids teamed up, grabbed cameras, and got straight into creating their own short films: coming up with stories, recording live sound, and even making their own sound effects and music. The Wanta School Holiday Program quickly became the place to be, with ideas flowing and creativity on full display.
At the same time, things got a little experimental with “Bush Beats,” where young people headed out to collect materials and turn them into instruments. From found objects to homemade drum kits, it was all about making something out of nothing and seeing what sounds you could create.
Back in the Wanta Room, the Music Sound Lab was running all day, giving kids the chance to jump on the gear, play around with beats, and start building tracks. While some of the tech took a bit of getting used to, it still became a steady hangout spot, especially when it came to creating music for the films.
A big shout out as well to the extra support on the ground, helping take kids out to the local tip to collect materials and turn everyday items into something creative for music production, proof that inspiration can come from anywhere.
What really stood out across the week was simple: when young people are given the space to create, they show up. Whether it was behind a camera, building instruments, or experimenting with sound, there was no shortage of imagination.
We’re already looking forward to building on this – more stories, more music, and more opportunities for Yuendumu’s young creatives to shine!
