One of the highlights of the calendar year rolled around with Arlparra getting invited to the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival once again. The Wanta Arlparra program, along with Arlparra School, took 8 students to Darwin for the event. Students were chosen because of their attendance and attitude at school this year. The trip was the best part of a week; we left on a Tuesday afternoon and returned to Arlparra the following Monday. Once again, for some of our students it was their first time flying and even their first time seeing the ocean! With a couple of extra days in the schedule compared to previous years, we had some more time to explore the beach and even get a swim in at the Waterfront. The hotel pool also provided a much needed mid-afternoon break and refresher for the students, who are not used to playing lots of tennis, doing big days of activities with new people and the Darwin humidity, let alone all three at once! Highlights included getting to see Yvonne Goolagong-Cawley, getting to experience a lot of tennis, exploring the Darwin CBD, visiting Crocodylus Park (and hold a crocodile!), doing some hip hop dancing, a concert with Barkaa and meeting students from other states. A hugely rewarding trip, and a great way to inspire more tennis at Arlparra!
