Northern Region Wanta Cup 2020 a SUCCESS! | Wanta Aboriginal Corporation

This past weekend the Northern Region Wanta Cup was held in Katherine.

Participating teams included Kalkaringi, Lajamanu and Ngukurr. Unfortunately, our Gapuwiyak Academy were unable to attend due to bad weather and unsafe roads.

Thirty students from all three communities descended on Katherine to enjoy a weekend of competition and fun. Games included Basketball, relay races consisting of 10 and 20 meter sprints, piggy back races, bear crawls, crab crawls, and a backwards run.

The WANTA Cup winner was decided by a points system. After some fierce and fun competition the winner was Lajamanu, who are hard to beat being the reigning champions for the last three years!!

As well as the competition, all the kids enjoyed leisure time at the Katherine pool and enjoyed a hearty and well deserved meal of fish and chips at the Katherine golf club.

We were really proud of all participants, Games were played in good spirit and all the kids showed great sportsmanship and shook hands at the end of every game.

The energy that the Ngukurr group had was infectious – they were a stand out when it came to supporting their team and being very vocal. Well done team Ngukurr!

Also thanks to all the Wanta staff involved, this would not be possible without your hard work, passion and dedication.

The kids who participated were selected based on school attendance and good behaviour. The Wanta Cup has proved to be a great incentive for kids in communities, and they have already asked for more events like this and camps in the future.
