This past week Kalkaringi hosted an interschool athletics carnival. Teams from Lajamanu and Pigeon Hole came and camped in the high school classrooms and the Wanta room and enjoyed two jam-packed days of sports and activities!
Our wonderful Wanta staff Simon, Prav and Ellie hosted the Lajamanu and Pigeon Hole teams and helped them get settled before enjoying a delicious dinner together, followed by an early night in preparation for the busy days ahead.
The first day of games included league tag, cricket, volleyball, footy, and even orienteering! Everyone from pre-school to year 12 took part and had lots of fun playing with people from other schools and learning new skills. It was great to have Healthy Harold join the party too, encouraging the students to make healthy decisions. Wanta then organised a community movie night on the big screen where the kids watched Tangled to chill out before another busy day.
The next day of competition saw epic displays by the senior kids clearing 1.65m on the high jump, to 800m running races. The day culminated in the ever-impressive sprints, including a staff relay where Wanta staff made up half of the winning team (#notcompetitive)!
The kids earnt points for their participation and placing in events throughout the carnival but bonus points were awarded by staff throughout for sportsmanship, picking up rubbish, teamwork, and being helpful. It was great to see so many additional points being awarded to kids from all classes! At the end of the two-day event Kalkaringi was awarded first place, followed by Lajamanu and then Pigeon Hole. Team spirit and sportsmanship was evident everywhere you looked.
The event culminated in an epic disco on the basketball court, with staff displaying their DJ skills. Many members of the community joined the party, and some amazing dance skills were showcased.
As Lajamanu and Pigeon Hole returned home for some well-earned rest, it was great to hear how much fun the kids had and discussions about who was going to host next year!
Thanks to Simon, Prav and Ellie for making this wonderful event possible for their Wanta Academies.
